Psychiatric Collaboration

Women professionally collaborating for the best care

Support Within Therapy and Beyond

Sometimes, even with meaningful therapy work, questions or challenges arise that can benefit from additional clinical insight.

For example, you might wonder whether medication could help, want clarity about your symptoms, or want a second professional perspective.

As part of working with me in therapy, if we both determine that extra support could be helpful, you may have access to a psychiatric consultation.

This service is only available to clients who are actively working with me in therapy, ensuring that any recommendations are integrated into the therapy work we are doing together. The psychiatrist acts as a consultant, supporting your care rather than replacing therapy.

This collaborative approach allows therapy and psychiatric expertise to work together, creating a more coordinated and supportive mental health journey.

How Psychiatric Collaboration Supports Your Therapy

When needed, a psychiatric consultation can provide:

  • Diagnostic clarity

  • Guidance on whether medication may help

  • Additional professional perspective

Because we’ve already been working together, the psychiatrist can review your history and questions within the context of your therapy, making the consultation more meaningful and actionable.

I attend the consultation with you to support you during the session and help integrate recommendations into our ongoing work.

How the Process Works

  • 1. We explore it in therapy first

We discuss your symptoms, patterns, and questions together. This ensures a psychiatric consultation is truly helpful and relevant.

  • 2. Referral if appropriate

If we decide it could be beneficial, I will provide a referral for your family doctor or nurse practitioner.

  • 3. 90-minute virtual psychiatric consultation

You attend the session with the psychiatrist, and I join to support you and guide the discussion.

  • 4. Clinical recommendations

The psychiatrist provides guidance regarding symptoms, diagnosis, or medication when appropriate.

  • 5. Integration into therapy

Recommendations are shared with your family doctor and incorporated into our therapy sessions, so your care is coordinated and supportive.

When a Psychiatric Consultation May Support Your Therapy

This service is ideal for clients who are already in therapy and:

  • Have persistent anxiety, depression, or mood challenges

  • Feel stuck or unsure about next steps

  • Have questions about whether medication could complement therapy

  • Are experiencing burnout, chronic stress, or life transitions

  • Want additional clarity or reassurance about their symptoms

A consultation adds perspective, guidance, and support, helping you move forward with confidence.

Benefits of a Psychiatric Consultation

  • Access to psychiatric expertise without navigating the system alone

  • Diagnostic clarification and professional insight

  • Medication guidance when appropriate

  • Coordinated care between therapist, psychiatrist, and family doctor

  • Therapist support during the consultation

Most importantly, it helps you feel supported and less isolated, while therapy remains central.

Fees and OHIP Coverage

The 90-minute psychiatric consultation is covered by OHIP. My participation, including preparation and support during the consultation, is billed at my standard therapy fee.

You are only paying for therapy support, while the psychiatrist’s consultation itself is covered.

Common Myths About Seeing a Psychiatrist

  • “Seeing a psychiatrist means something is seriously wrong with me.”

Seeking additional insight is a proactive step, not a sign of weakness.

  • “If I see a psychiatrist, I’ll be forced to take medication.”

Consultations provide information, not pressure. Any decisions are yours.

  • “A psychiatrist will replace my therapy.”

Psychiatry does not replace therapy. The psychiatrist provides recommendations that support the work we are already doing together.

  • “Only people with severe problems see psychiatrists.”

Many people seek consultation for anxiety, depression, burnout, or questions about treatment options.

  • “It takes forever to see a psychiatrist.”

Through this collaborative network, many clients can access consultation within weeks, depending on availability.
